SUMMIT ROUTES For those that are just beginning their climbing journey, we wanted to explain what a route is and how they are rated. Summit Climbing Gym has over 120 different routes that we are constantly changing so you can continually challenge yourself.
A route is a combination of handholds and footholds used to take a certain path up a rock or mountain. The ratings of routes are done using the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS). The first number in the YDS designates the class of the climb (always “5” for free climbs). The second number defines the degree of difficulty. Routes at Summit Climbing Gym range from 5.5 to 5.13. The higher the number to the right of the decimal, the harder the route is rated.
